This image was contributed by David Ford, whose grandfather, Lt. Andrew F. Byrd Jr. (A.F. to his friends) was the pilot of the Winnie Dee, another B-26 in the 449th BG 322nd BS. He inherited the original patch for the BS. "My understanding is that they thought they were going to go to North Africa but it was taken before they arrived. With this in mind, the African dropping the bomb from the clouds was chosen as the squadron's symbol."
